HIL Systems Engineer - Level 3 or 4
The HIL Systems Engineer researches, develops, designs, maintains, manages and operates Hardware In Loop (HIL) systems to validate and verify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic PLC software and associated control logic for use in large mining haul trucks.
Responsibilities
HIL Systems Engineer 1:
Conducts test of software systems on hardware in loop simulators.
- Writes test procedures to evaluate software features based on requirements and specifications.
- Configures and programs vehicle PLC and HIL simulator for testing
- Confers with Engineers and other personnel to develop operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information.
- Responsible for creating HIL automated test cases and test protocols while maintaining HIL testing best practices.
- Participates in the Engineering Development Program.
HIL Systems Engineer 2:
- All duties of HIL Systems Engineer 1, plus:
- Develops and designs HIL test system for mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electro-mechanical systems for use on large mining haul trucks.
- Researches solutions to optimize system designs and parameters with analytical methods.
- Performs system calculations and/or simulations to create plant models for HIL testing.
- Reads and follows HIL Systems procedures to perform HIL Systems activities.
- Works with other SW developers to research and analyze the best method to test a specific SW feature.
- Reads and interprets maintenance and operators manuals, technical drawings, basic electrical or hydraulic schematics, engineering specifications, and reports.
- Writes a technical report at the completion of a SW test and provides feedback to the requesting Engineer on the results.
- Uses PC based data analysis software to verify data integrity and post process SW test data.
- Works independently or as a team member with other engineers, technicians, and field service personnel to complete a HIL Systems project.
HIL Systems Engineer 3:
- All duties of HIL Systems Engineer 2, plus:
- Creates schematic representations of mechanical, hydraulic, and electro mechanical systems.
- Interfaces with other disciplines (Mechanical, Hydraulic, Electrical, Drive system, etc.) to create HIL specifications that define control system simulation necessary for verifying haul truck software and to
- specify required HIL test system components.
- Works independently and as a team member with other engineers, designers, and production personnel or on ad hoc projects.
- Analyzes data and writes technical reports. Uses the data, observations, and engineering experience to draw conclusions from the results and compare to the engineering specification if available.
- Determines root cause of failure or makes recommendations for improvement.
- Proposes, researches, designs, and analyzes new in-house HIL Systems equipment.
- Leads the HIL Systems activities required for R&D research projects into new truck technologies.
- Leads HIL Systems Engineers or Technicians in the installation and operation of HIL system equipment for repair and upgrades.
- Works with major component suppliers (engine, drive system, etc.) or customers on joint SW Systems projects. Acts as the point of contact for the HIL Systems Group.
HIL Systems Engineer 4 (Senior):
- All duties of HIL Systems Engineer 3, plus:
- Estimates time and cost requirements for the development and implementation of haul truck HIL test systems.
- Develops detailed test plans to initiate both component and system level testing and validation.
- Responsible for planning, managing, and optimizing the HIL test system to achieve maximum test efficiency, HIL test system uptime, and HIL test system utilization.
- Researches and analyzes customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data.
- Trains, mentors, and develops HIL Systems Engineers and other personnel on procedures, advanced data analysis concepts, and best practices related to HIL Systems testing.
- Acts as the technical expert for the engineering department in specialized areas of complex system troubleshooting and HIL Systems technology.
- Leads SW System Verification and Validation planning through execution to include system certification.
- Works with Engineering, Sales and Product Management to review customer requirements to ensure products meet national or international standards.
- Plans and executes multiple projects in parallel including resource allocation and logistics.
Competencies
Education and Experience:
- HIL Systems Engineer 1: A Master Science Degree or Master of Engineering Degree (M.S./ M.E.) or, a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSME/MET) or, Associate of Science Degree (ASEE) with 10 years of relevant mechanical experience in
- an engineering environment.
- HIL Systems Engineer 2: A Master Science Degree or Master of Engineering Degree (M.S./ M.E.) with 1 year of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment or, a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSME/MET)
- with 2 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment.
- HIL Systems Engineer 3: A Master Science Degree or Master of Engineering Degree (M.S./ M.E.) with 4 to 6 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment or, a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSME/MET)
- with 6 to 8 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment.
- HIL Systems Engineer 4 (Senior): A Master Science Degree or Master of Engineering Degree (M.S./ M.E.) with 6 to 8 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment or, a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSME/MET)
- with 8 to 10 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment.
Job Skills:
- HIL Systems Engineer 1:
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as algebra, probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Knowledge of CAD and 3D modeling software (ex. Creo) preferred, but not required.
- Knowledge of system modeling techniques and demonstrated experience in Matlab/Simulink.
- Knowledge of HIL system principles, architecture and hardware solutions.
- Knowledge of HIL system software tools (ex. dSPACE Control Desk, Automation Desk, and Synect).
- Knowledge of embedded systems/PLC for the purposes of facilitating tests and/or debug.
- Knowledge of basic low voltage controls and electrical circuits.
- Ability to review and interpret specifications that describe system function and logic and create verification test criteria based on these requirements
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance manuals, and procedure manuals, software specifications.
- HIL Systems Engineer 2:
- Demonstrated proficiency of HIL Systems Engineer 1, plus:
- Ability to design, develop, and maintain plant models, test cases and HIL automation scripts.
- Knowledge of industrial hydraulics, mechanical and electro-mechanical systems.
- Ability to mathematically model mechanical, hydraulic, and basic electrical systems.
- Ability to interpret and develop detailed technical requirements and follow requirements based testing principles.
- Skilled in system modeling techniques and demonstrated experience in Matlab/Simulink.
- Ability to create schematics depicting system operation and design.
- Ability to review and post process machine data logs to develop future system operational parameters using nCode Glyphworks or similar.
- Skilled in common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Skilled in the application and use of basic sensor and data acquisition concepts and best practices.
- Skilled in the installation and configuration of truck software
- Ability to adapt to diverse testing situations and challenges at customer’s site, supplier’s site, or inhouse HIL Systems lab.

- Skilled in acting as the technical expert in at least one advanced plant model subsystem.
- Skilled in the application of HIL Systems planning and managing projects.
- Skilled in AC drive system controls and its application on mining trucks.
- Skilled in applying advanced mobile equipment hydraulic concepts to HIL Systems ing programs.
- Skilled in the application and use of advanced sensor and data acquisition concepts and best practices.

Additional Requirements:
- Is expected to travel nationally and internationally up to 20% to customer or supplier sites.

- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license and passport.
